For the record Our records show that some of our ancestors were Mormon. We do not condemn them nor are we their judges, but for the record, we are not Mormons. |
||||||||||||||||||||
|
However, we, the ones doing this display, are Bible believing, Bible living Christians, and as such, lovingly offer the warning Jesus gave the Jewish people, which is wholly appropriate for us today. |

James
Porteous 1815—1883 migration: Lesmahago, Scotland
to Sandy Gulch, West Point, Calif. According to Scottish & Early Mormon Church records, James Porteous born 4 Oct 1815 and wife #1 Jannet Steele born 26 Jun 1814, married 7 Jun 1835, both from Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, with their children John born 28 Dec 1835, Lillies born 12 Jul 1840, Jannet born 16 Mar 1843, & James Steele born 17 Mar 1844, booked on the SS Sailor Prince in Liverpool, England on 24 Sep 1848, listing himself as James Porteous 32, wife Janet Steel Porteous 35, & children John 11, Lillay (Lillies) 8, Janet 5, & James Steel 2, with a total of 315 passengers minus 4 who died enroute, arriving in New Orleans on 20 Nov 1848. Mormon Church Officials (MCO) using St Louis, MO as one of their temporary hub centers, sent the migrants there & told them to “take work only as a temporary stay on their way to Zion,” Salt Lake City (SLC). The Porteouses including 150 others booked the Grand Turk Steamer up the Mississippi to St Louis, MO on 24 Nov 1848, landing unwittingly into what was starting to be a horrible epidemic of cholera, which at that time, no one knew the cause. Jannet Porteous, James’ wife, was pregnant with their fifth child. On 6 Jul 1849, wife Jannet died giving birth to her new baby Anne. Eleven days later on 17 Jul baby Anne and their daughter Jannet age 6 died of the cholera. It was horrible, thousands died. Agnes Fife nee Allen 29, on the same voyage, lost her entire family, husband and children to the deadly disease. James Porteous married Agnes Fife, wife #2, in June 1850 according to St Louis County records. Sadly, Agnes died also giving birth to Jean Ellen Porteous 31 Mar 1851. In 1852, European goldrush migrants were overrunning MCO hub centers. MCO, having a “Perpetual Immigration Fund” for the poor, ordered all migrants (saints) to abandon the Midwest and head to SLC (Zion). From St Louis steamboats took the Mississippi – up the Missouri ≈ 783-mile trip to Kanesville, IA (renamed Council Bluffs later that year) taking about 10 days. In Kanesville wagon trains varying from 20 to 40 wagons outfitted with oxen, and milk cows, formed and began the ≈ 1,000-mile overland to Utah. James Porteous & children from St Louis, MO, took steamship on the Mississippi up the Missouri to Kanesville, IA; there they joined a wagon train of John Tidwell Company: Kanesville, Iowa 1852 June 4 - Salt Lake Valley 1852 Sep 10-23; (James Porteous listed). Over 20 wagon train companies completed the trek in 1852, making it one of the heaviest years of traffic on the Mormon Pioneer Trail. The heavily burdened wagon trains followed the north side of the Platte River through Nebraska and Wyoming, eventually traversing the Rocky Mountains to reach the Salt Lake Valley by early fall. James Porteous married wife #3, Mary Ann Watson born 28 Nov 1815, of Glascow, Scotland, in SLC, Utah on 11 Oct 1853. Sons William Watson Porteous was born in SLC 16 Jul 1854 and Thomas Twaddle Porteous was born 28 Feb 1856 in Ogden, Utah. James & family emigrated further to Carson Valley, Nevada where daughter Lillies M. Porteous now 17 years old, married Peter Van Sycle 11 Aug 1857. The Porteous family, the Bardsley’s and others traveled on the hard journey to California by ox drawn wagons through Bear Valley and Big Meadows where they met Jack Sanders on horseback who led them the rest of the way to West Point & Sandy Gulch. James & Mary’s last child Mary Ann Porteous was born 8 Feb 1859 in Sandy Gulch. On that date, James, the father was 43. Wife Mary was 43. Children: John 23, James Steel 18, Jean Ellen 7, William 4, Thomas 3. John, James Steel, Jean Ellen (Kline), William, and Thomas Twaddle are buried in the West Point Cemetery. James Porteous, wife Mary Watson Porteous, daughter Mary Ann Nelson, her husband James Peter Nelson, and their daughter Selma Nelson are buried in the Porteous family private cemetery at LightHouse Ranch, Sandy Gulch, West Point, California. |

Death of Son Rhode Porteous (1879—1917) Sutter Creek, CA, industrial accident

Grandpa Rhode’s
accidental death although tragic and heartbreaking is also a tribute to his
unwavering faith, resilience, and courage as he was suffering greatly and
facing death. Gpa Rhode was well liked, honest, and hard-working, but had a
problem with alcohol. In just one month before he died, there was a Nazarene tent
revival in West Point where the VFW is now. Gpa Rhode sincerely accepted
Jesus Christ and deliverance from alcohol there. The accident occurred on the job at a
lumber mill, walking beside stacked rough-sawn lumber, some fell on him from
the waist down. The nearest doctor was in Sutter Creek nearly 30 miles away.
No telephones. No automobiles. No ambulance service. Gpa asked his cousin and
best friend Harold Raymond Havens, to see that his wife and son, Dora and
Roy, be cared for “if I don’t make it through this”. Gpa’s oldest brother, Uncle
Jim, James Park Porteous, a six horse team and wagon freighter, had a car but
couldn’t get it started and no one knew how to fix cars. Finally, Uncle Jim
drove Gpa in his horse drawn wagon to Sutter Creek. It was five days after
the accident and Gpa had to be carried upstairs to the doctor’s office where
he soon after died. The tremendous testimony to God’s wonderful keeping power
and to Gpa for his stamina and endurance through unbelievable suffering was
this: Uncle Jim tried to give Gpa whisky to help alleviate pain, Gpa Rhode
refused it. Praise God! I will see Gpa Rhode when the trump sounds and the
LORD raptures His Church without spot or wrinkle or any such thing. Gpa
believed God’s Word spoken in that tent revival; that the LORD would do what
He said He would do. The LORD truly is a Deliverer of all that is contrary to
Him and a Lover of everyone’s soul. Let this testimony be a blessing to you
as well. |

Because she was a private pioneer citizen rather
than a widely publicized public figure, no verified photograph of Lillies Van
Sickle from 1919 is known to exist in public digital archives. However, there
are surviving records and visuals of her descendants and the Van Sickle Bi-State Park in Lake Tahoe that commemorate her family's
legacy. [1, 2, 3] As a memorial to his late grandfather
Henry Van Sickle, Jack Van Sickle donated 542 acres of his land to the
State of Nevada in 1988 to create a new Nevada State Park. Subsequently, the
State of California purchased the adjacent land, the Van Sickle family’s
former Crescent V Ranch, to connect the park to the community of South Lake
Tahoe. The ranch’s barn, a circa-1914 log cabin and
housekeeping cabins from the 1930s-era Three Pines Motel, were all relocated
to their current location in 1960. The Van Sickle family operated the
Stateline Stables on the site until 1993 with up to 60 horses taking riders
on trails throughout the area, creating unforgettable memories for many of
Tahoe’s vacationers. Opened to the public in the summer of 2011, the
park is managed by the Nevada Division of State Parks in partnership with the
California Tahoe Conservancy |
